Sore Throat

  • Most sore throats are viral and don't require antibiotics. But if the tonsils are inflamed or large, there may be a requirement for an antibiotic so contact the surgery.
  • Gargle soluble Aspirin or consult a pharmacist for throat sprays which contain local-anaesthetic.
  • Drink plenty of fluids and stay indoors and keep warm.
  • Symptoms usually settle within 7 days. If they go on longer than that, contact the surgery, as you may have glandular fever. A blood test is needed to check for this.
